The kaleidoscope is one of the most fascinating devices. It is based on a simple rule 'reflection' but the resulting image creates whole new chaotic and mysterious patterns. This project is virtual kaleidoscope that unlimits the physical boundaries of real ones. Using a video feed instead of physical beads makes the kaleidoscopic image automatically change according to its backgrong music. The theme music video for Moulin Rouge was used for this project.

This project is directly affected by the other digital kaleidoscope projects, especially from Suzung Kim & Jaegon Lee's 'Software Kaleidoscope (2006)' (see figures below) which generates kaleidoscopic images with real time camera feed. However, the existing software kaleidoscopes are very flat because they hardly consider the reflection of light. So, I tried to simulate the real 3 mirror system using the maya's ray tracing engine to make a realistic optical effects.

Next, I played my kaleidoscopic movie on a tiny mp3 player. (iriver U10) To see the movie on this tiny installation, spectators have to bend their body onto the ground. I shot some videos to show the sudden contrast of the size between installation and the environment.
